As part of a group of five Scubanauts, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. and meet with several members of Congress and the Senate to discuss ocean issues that matter to us. During our visit, we met with Kathy Castor, Daniel Webster, Greg Steube, Nancy Mace, and Senators Rick Scott, Ashley Moody, Tim Scott, and Lindsey Graham.
This was truly a once in a lifetime experience, and I am extremely grateful that I had the chance to be part of it. Being able to speak directly with elected officials about issues affecting our oceans was both exciting and meaningful.
Each meeting gave us the opportunity to share our concerns about the health of marine ecosystems and explain why ocean conservation is important. We discussed topics that impact our coastal environments and the future of our oceans, and it was interesting to hear the perspectives of different representatives and senators.
Although each meeting was unique, they all provided a chance for us to advocate for the issues we care about and explain why these topics deserve attention. It was impressive to see how much work goes into the legislative process and how important it is for elected officials to hear directly from the people they represent.
One of the most rewarding parts of the experience was seeing that our voices were taken seriously. As students and young ocean advocates, we were able to sit down with lawmakers and have real conversations about the challenges facing our oceans. Rather than simply listening, many of the representatives and senators asked questions and engaged in discussions about the topics we presented. It was encouraging to know that they were interested in hearing our perspectives and learning about the work that Scubanauts do to support marine conservation and education.
Preparation Makes a Difference
I felt very comfortable speaking during the meetings because of the outreach experience I have gained through Scubanauts. Participating in community events and public outreach activities has helped me become more confident when talking to others about ocean related issues. Because of that experience, I was able to clearly explain our message and actively participate in the conversations with each office we visited. It was exciting to be part of discussions with people who play such an important role in shaping policies that can affect our environment.
Throughout the trip, every meeting felt significant because it gave us another opportunity to advocate for ocean conservation. Moving from office to office and meeting with so many elected officials in a short period of time made the experience even more memorable. Each conversation reinforced the importance of sharing our passion for protecting marine ecosystems and ensuring that ocean issues remain a priority.
The opportunity to meet with members of Congress and the Senate, discuss issues that matter to us, and represent Scubanauts on Capitol Hill is something I will always remember. It was an incredible experience, and I am thankful to have had the chance to participate in such important conversations about the future of our oceans.
